The Language of Mental Health

The language we use around mental health plays a crucial role in reducing stigma and promoting understanding. Using respectful and supportive terms helps normalise mental health challenges and encourages open conversations. Choosing language that avoids judgment and emphasises empathy can create a more inclusive environment, making it easier for people to seek help and support.

Our Language of Mental Health Webinar

The history of mental health is tied up in our use of the language around it. Lots of us have grown up around words such as mad, crazy, mental, psycho and other words like this. A lot of the language around mental health has often been very negative and critical of other people and their experiences.

Red Umbrella’s dedicated webinar includes:

  • Looking at the important role language plays around mental health

  • The struggles some people may be facing with their mental health

  • The language to avoid using and some alternative language that we can use to promote less stigma around mental health and promote open conversations
