Background

With the construction industry unfortunately having the highest rates of reported mental health and suicides and with the finishing sector within that having the highest rates, Mansell Building Solutions being an extremely caring company for all its employees came to Red Umbrella wanting a blend of training and support for all of their staff.

Solution

Red Umbrella rolled out bespoke management training and MHFAider training as well as utilising its sister company, Carecoins for all staff to have access to.

To address mental health in construction head-on, Red Umbrella delivered a blended programme:

• MHFAider® training for designated staff to recognise signs and start conversations while signposting support. 

• Bespoke management sessions focused on conversations on site and reasonable adjustments for construction mental health. 

• Carecoins (our mental health EAP) providing all employees confidential, on-demand therapy and aftercare. 

• Reporting and aftercare to track uptake and outcomes while maintaining confidentiality.

Outcome

Why this matters for mental health in UK construction 

1. Higher-than-average suicide risk among construction workers, especially finishing trades, demands sector-specific support.   

2. Construction mental health issues like stress and anxiety remain prevalent across the UK workforce, underlining the need for proactive management training and easy access to help.
