We provide support for
Pilots & the Aviation Industry
Working with industry experts Skypeople, we have developed proven solutions to reduce the effects of mental ill-health and substance misuse for pilots.
Pilot Mental Health – Going Beyond Compliance
An aviation work force is spread over the globe and so presents a similar issue to that of the logistics industry. In 2018, what better way to have people engage in our services from a remote location than through an app?
Red Umbrella’s Pilot Support Service App had been developed in order to work in a very proactive and reactive and in conjunction with the EASA recommendations brought about by the Germanwings Flight 9525 in March 2015. In order to make our service effectively, we will need to include all the below:
Proactive
- Webinars
- Self-help material
- Anonymous forum for chatting to peers – similar to the Professional Pilots Rumour Network – PPRuNe
- Anonymous peer report option
Reactive
- Access to phone our therapists
- Access to phone Peers
- Access to contact an Aviation psychologist
- It will also be a good opportunity to help, oversee and support the peers.
With the app being so versatile, it can be bespoke to company requirements.
By enabling Red Umbrella to care for your pilots, anonymity is assured and therefore a higher likelihood of engagement will be seen.
Existing peer support platforms do go a long way to help and work in a very reactive way. Peers are not trained therapists. This means they may not have the correct skill set required to coach people through their problems. They can obviously rationalise and empathise with many problems pilots have, however not all pilots may feel it is suitable for them to talk to a pilot about particular topics.
It’s important to note that Anxiety, Stress and Martial issues accounted for 45% of all calls to Project Wingman, an American peer support system. These problem are not exclusive to pilots.
Giving the option to talk to both a therapist and a pilot, anonymously, gives a greater choice to the pilots and therefore are more likely to engage.
Chronic Fatigue is a universal problem within the aviation industry. It can compound existing problems, making things seem bigger than they realistically are.
E.A.S.A Report Guidance
- The pilot support system and the reporting system should be adapted for each
organisation. - Mutual trust between flight crews and hierarchical structures of the operator is necessary.
- Pilots need to be assured that mental health issues will not be stigmatised and
concerns raised will be handled confidentially and appropriately. - Pilots will be supported with the primary aim to allow him/her to return to the
flight deck.
By having one foot inside your company, and one foot out, Red Umbrella provide solutions to the points above. We are able to cater to your bespoke needs, accounting for organisation size and culture.
